What is the 3D Secure liability shift?
The 3DS liability shift rule
The 3D Secure (3DS) liability shift is a rule that protects you (the merchant) from fraudulent transactions.
The liability for fraudulent chargebacks shifts from the business to the card issuer when the 3DS liability shift applies. For example, if a shopper denies they made or authorized a purchase (lost or stolen card), the liability for the fraudulent chargeback shifts from you to the card issuer.
When does the 3DS liability shift apply?
As a general rule, the shift applies when a 3DS payment is successfully authenticated for one of the following card schemes:
- Mastercard
- Maestro
- Visa
- American Express
- Bancontact
- Cartes Bancaires
- JCB
- UnionPay
Note: The 3DS liability shift doesn’t apply to recurring transactions.
Tip: The 3DS liability shift can also apply to other situations that depend on the acquirer and combination of 3DS responses.
Tip: For more information, see 3DS chargeback liability shift rules.
