The payout descriptor is the information the account holder will see on their bank statement when receiving a payout. It consists of three lines and is dependent on the payout integration.

For scheduled payouts, the payout descriptor has the following default format:

  1. Line: For US AND EU payouts. The platform name e.g. "PlatformXYZ".
  2. Line: "TX......XT" will always show. This is the reference which is used when a statement returns, e.g. because a bank account is closed. This way the system can recognise the transfer and can automatically book it.
  3. Line: Name of the platform + "payout" - e.g. "PlatformXYZ payout".

For manual payouts, the payout descriptor usually consists of the following three lines:

  3. Line: The description field indicated in the /payoutAccountHolder request.

Regardless of the payout integration, line 1 can be adjusted to a different fixed descriptor or placeholders such as: ${accountCode}, ${accountDescription}, ${accountHolder}, ${accountHolderDescription} and ${marketplaceDescription}.

Furthermore, the second and third line of the descriptor can be swapped.

For scheduled payouts, line 3 can also be adjusted to a different fixed descriptor or placeholders such as: ${accountCode}, ${accountDescription}, ${accountHolder}, ${accountHolderDescription} and ${marketplaceDescription}.

Regarding line 3, there is generally uncertainty about how the receiving party will truncate it or about the character limit of payout descriptor, which Adyen does not have full control over.
