Why do I get "Payment Details Not Found" for Maestro recurring payments?

If you are seeing a refusal reason containing the message “payment details not found”, then check if the initial transaction was processed as a Maestro payment.  Maestro branded cards currently do not, by default, allow for all types of recurring payments (e.g. Subscriptions and CardOnFile) and these transactions are refused by the refusal reason: “Payment details not found”, even if the shopperReference and the recurringDetailReference match.

Reasons for this are as follows:

  • Maestro is a debit card and payments are therefore immediately debited. Recurring transactions with a debit card increase the risk for issuers as the shopper might have insufficient funds on the card.
  • Maestro used to have an authentication requirement, meaning that it always required 3DS1 or 3DS2 before processing, and many issuers did not adopt the new requirements yet, so they will mandate authentication. Therefore a recurring transaction will be refused.

There are two types of recurring transaction:

  • when the shopper is present (Customer Initiated Transactions CIT)
  • when the shopper is not present (Merchant Initiated Transaction MIT).

Authentication is required for CIT and not for MIT, as for the latter the shopper would not be able to authenticate them as they are not present when the payment is initiated (e.g. subscriptions).

Therefore, recurring CIT Maestro transactions are allowed as long as the 3D Secure requirements are met.

Please contact our support if you would like to offer recurring CIT Maestro, as this requires specific configuration on your account.
